Systems Engineer

  • Future Focussed Law Firm
  • Hands-on Role with Full Ownership
  • Support for Training and Certification

Work amongst a 100 person team to keep systems and technology running smoothly and securely. Understand how things work today and help shape what comes next.

We’re a Tauranga law firm of 100 people, and we’re looking for someone to take day-to-day ownership of the technology they all rely on. This is a hands-on role in a small IT team. You’ll be the person people walk up to, ask for help, and trust with the thing they can’t get working right before an important meeting. Keeping everything running smoothly and securely is the heart of the job.

You’ll help us get more out of the tools we already have, automate the repetitive stuff, and help find safe, practical ways to put AI to work for our Lawyers. If you enjoy helping people as much as improving how things work, read on.

Currently:

We have spent the last two years rebuilding our foundations. Most of the on-premise server infrastructure that used to occupy the cupboard under the stairs is gone. Our line of business applications are SaaS. We run a Microsoft cloud environment, manage our endpoints properly, and continue to automate what can be automated. But there’s so much more to do.

The next step is how we introduce AI tools and workflows into the firm intentionally; on top of an environment we understand and control. There is real work ahead of us; evaluating tools, configuring them safely, and helping people use them well. You would be building on work that has already been done, and you would have a say in what comes next.

What you would be doing:

  • Supporting our people directly and following issues through to a proper resolution rather than a repeat fix.
  • Administering our Microsoft 365 environment, including Exchange Online, SharePoint, Teams and Entra ID.
  • Managing our Windows endpoint fleet through Intune, including conditional access, compliance, configuration and application deployment.
  • Looking after the infrastructure that remains including networking, firewalls, and backup in conjunction with our external providers.
  • Automating manual work using PowerShell and Power Automate and improving the processes around it.
  • Work with the team to find the right technology for real problems, weighing up cost, practicality, security and whether an off-the-shelf option beats something built in-house.
  • Work alongside our external suppliers and contributing to the projects that move the firm forward.
  • Work with the members of our wider administration team to ensure great service delivery to our internal clients.

What you would bring:

  • Solid hands-on experience administering Microsoft 365 in a production environment.
  • Working knowledge of Entra ID and endpoint management through Intune.
  • Sound Windows Server, Windows 11 and networking fundamentals.
  • Practical experience of backup and restore.
  • Scripting ability in PowerShell and experience with Power Automate would be a big advantage, along with the instinct and eye to spot work that could and should be automated.
  • The ability to adapt within an agile team due to the rapidly changing legal technology landscape.
  • The patience and clarity to explain technical things to people who are very good at their own jobs but not yours.
  • Previous experience in a professional services firm is also a big advantage. You’ll need the ability to understand discretion, deadlines and the pressures they bring, and the responsibilities the firm has to our clients.

What we offer:

  • A genuine say in the firm’s technology direction, and the autonomy to get on with it.
  • A modern tech stack and the mandate to keep building that way.
  • Support for training and certification.
  • AI tools to inform your judgement, not replace it.
  • A team where everyone helps where it is needed, going the extra mile whenever required for our clients, internal and external.
  • A supportive firm with a great team culture and rich history
  • Free onsite parking and additional birthday leave
  • Other employee benefits
